The position of Village Attorney is unique to the Village of Port Chester. Unlike other villages in the State of New York, the Village Attorney is a full-time position, appointed by the Village Manager with an employment contract authorized by the Board of Trustees.
Not many residents are aware of the wide role that the Village Attorney plays in Village government. He represents the Village in all legal proceedings and acts as advisor to the Village staff, as well as counsel to the Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals and the many Village boards and commissions. The Village Attorney also attends all meetings of the Board of Trustees and prepares resolutions and local laws. He drafts and reviews contracts, leases, easements, licenses and deeds. In addition, the Village Attorney assists the Village Manager in negotiating collective bargaining negotiations and personnel-related natters as required. He also prepares legal opinions on all matters of municipal law.
The Village retains the firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King, to serve as Labor Counsel. Outside counsel is occasionally retained for specialized services or a conflict of interest upon approval of the Village Manager and Board of Trustees.
While the Village Attorney is the attorney for the Village, he cannot provide advice to individuals on private matters.
