Can the Village represent private citizens?
No. The Village Attorney cannot represent persons in private legal matters. The Village Attorney only represents the Village Manager, Board of Trustees, Village departments and village boards and commissions in the course of his official duties.
I was injured or my property was damaged. How do I file a claim against the Village?
You may obtain a form either in person at Village Hall or download here. Fill it out and return to the Village Attorney’s office. The Village will forward the claim to its insurance company, the New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal (NYMIR) who will handle the claim and make a decision.
I need an attorney. What do I do?
The Village Attorney does not provide legal services to the general public. You may wish to contact the Westchester County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service or Legal Aid Society of Westchester County or Legal Services of the Hudson Valley.
I have a summons to appear in court. What do I do? How do I get it postponed?
If you have a summons, you must appear in court on the date and time directed on the face of the ticket. The Village Prosecutor will be in court representing the Village.
What is the difference between the Village Prosecutor and the District Attorney?
The District Attorney investigates and prosecutes criminal activity (other than violations of the Village of Port Chester Code or certain violations of the State of New York such as the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code or Vehicle and Traffic Code) throughout Westchester County.
